 Unit l: Famous people and Idols 

Lesson 1: Concept of famous person and idol 

a) A famous person is a celebrity, someone who is most well-known by a lot of people. Sometimes, a famous person is associated with someone who is successful in what he/she does. On the list of famous people, achievers in science and technology are also included.

Examples of famous people:

Filipe J. Nyusi, VenâncioMondlane, Donald Trump, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Joe Biden, Rihanna, Doppaz, Gabriel Junior, Mr. Bow, Liza James, Twenty fingers, 50 Cent, Rick Ross, Neymar Jr, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, etc

b) An idol is someone whose lifestyle or activity an inspiration to others. Or simply someone who is highly adored or loved by many people. Achievers in science and technology, movies actors, athletes, politicians, comedians, etc are in the group of idols. 

Examples of idols: 

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Rihanna, Vladimir Putin, Samora Machel, Michael Jackson, Bill Gates, Buddha, etc.

Lesson 2: a) Famous people in the world 

Famous people in the world are Individuals who are internationally well-known by a lot of people. Some of them are mentioned in the previous lesson, like Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Rihanna, Rick Ross, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Michael Jackson, etc.

b) Famous people in Mozambique 

Those who are most well-known in our country, starting from musicians, singers, football players, politicians, comedians, actors, athletes, etc. On this list, we add Gabriel Junior, Filipe J Nyusi, Lurdes Mutola, Ossufo Momade, Ziqo, Joe Williams, Fred Jossias, Liloca, Mr.Bow etc.

Exercise 2

Decide if these people are Mozambican celebrities or international celebrities:

Barack Obama, Armando Emilio Guebuza, Paulina Chiziane, Rosália Mboa, Cristiano Ronaldo, Guillian Mbappé, Neymar Jr, Fred Jossias, Liloca, Luan Santana, Jean Claude Van Dame, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Malangatana.

Lesson 3: What makes a famous person or a celebrity 

Most of the times, famous people come from different areas of activities also known as life spheres. Many celebrities today became famous because of what they do or their occupation. For instance, from sports, through football game Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr, Guillian Mbappé, Haaland, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Dominguez, Ratifo, and others become famous. In politics, Armando Emilio Guebuza, Filipe J Nyusi, Ossufo Momade, António Muchanga, Joe Biden, Vladimir Putin, Samora Machel, Jacob Zuma and others become famous and celebrities. Through entertainment (TV, comedy, music, movie) Gabriel Junior, Fred Jossias, Liloca, Mr.Bow, Tio Yado, Joe Williams, Ziqo, Zaida Chongo, Jet Li, Jackie Chan and others became famous. In science and technology, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and others have become famous. 

Unfortunately, some other people have become famous not because of being successful nor because of doing good actions, people like Osama Bin Laden and Sadam Hussein became famous through criminal activities.

Lesson 4: Question tags 

Study these examples 

a) Cristiano Ronaldo is a football player, isn't he?

b) Lionel Messi doesn't play football, does he? 

The min questions "isn't he?" and "does he?" are known as question tags, used at the end of a sentence, normally for confirmation if what is being said is true or false.  

Basic rules of question tags 

1. The sentence and the question tag must be in the same tense; 

2. If the sentence is in the positive form, the question tag must be in the negative form, and vice versa;

3. The question tag must be formed by the auxiliar verb which is used in the tense to make questions.

Lesson 5: Achievers in science and technology 

There are those successful people who have made it and became famous through their genius inventions, discoveries and theories. Today, the names of these people have become popular in the academic world. 

Examples of the most popular achievers in science and technology include Mark Zuckerberg, the C.E.O of Meta and Instagram; Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, Isac Newton, Charles Darwin, etc. 

Assignment 1

In groups of 4, write about advances and contributions made by Isac Newton and Charles Darwin in science.

Rogério Dinis, popularly known as Mc Roger is a Mozambican singer and TV presenter, born in Inhaca Island, Maputo city in 1969.
